Most common causes
These checks stay outside sealed refrigerant lines, electrical cabinets, blower compartments, and frozen coil surfaces. Do not chip ice, pour hot water on the coil, add refrigerant, open service valves, or keep forcing long cooling cycles while the AC is frozen.
Turn cooling off at the thermostat. Use fan-only mode only if there is no water, electrical concern, burning smell, or unsafe condition around the equipment.
Replace a packed air filter, open supply vents, and make sure return grilles are not blocked by furniture, curtains, or stored items.
Look from a safe distance for ice on visible copper lines, the air-handler area, or the outdoor line set, and note whether airflow is weak or the vents blow warm air.

A clogged filter, blocked return, closed supply vents, dirty blower wheel, duct restriction, or weak blower motor can keep warm air from crossing the evaporator coil. The coil temperature can drop below freezing and build ice.
Low refrigerant changes pressure and temperature inside the system. If the copper line outside is frozen, the AC blows warm air, or the ice returns after thawing, the refrigerant circuit should be tested by a licensed HVAC technician.
